  • The Readwise Reader app is a great way to keep up with your Twitter feed.

    • Create lists in your Twitter account.
    • Subscribe to those lists in Reader.
    • Receive a digest of each Twitter list twice daily.

It’s a great way to keep up with what’s happening without going to Twitter!

  • The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who cultivate this skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive. (Cal Newport) šŸ’¬

  • It’s 6 pm EST, and I’m at my daughter’s softball game. Near Atlanta, Georgia.

It’s a beautiful day for softball!

  • ā€œThe real measure of any time management technique is whether or not it helps you neglect the right things.ā€ (Oliver Burkeman, Four Thousand Weeks) šŸ’¬

  • ā€œI define minimalism as ā€the intentional promotion of the things we most value by removing anything that distracts us from them.ā€œ … It isn’t primarily about decluttering or organizing; it’s about creating freedom.ā€ (Joshua Becker, Things That Matter) šŸ’¬

  • ā€œWe’ve mistaken doing things—being ā€œproductiveā€ā€”as the measure of a day well spent, when really that’s just one of many by-products of living well.ā€ (Madeleine Dore, I Didn’t Do the Thing Today) šŸ’¬

  • The benefits of mind wandering

Reading Stolen Focus by Johann Hari šŸ“š, the author discusses the ā€œDisruption of Mind Wanderingā€ in Chapter 5 and how we tend to consider mind wandering negative. Yet, the author explains, it’s part of how we learn and create. ā€œCreativity is not where you create some new thing that’s emerged from your brain.ā€ ā€œIt’s a new association between two things already there.ā€ Mind-wandering allows ā€œmore extended trains of thought to unfold, which allows for more associations to be made. • ā€œI try to avoid having thoughts. They lead to other thoughts, and-if you’re not careful-those lead to actions. Actions make you tired. I have this on rather good authority from someone who once read it in a book.ā€ (Brandon Sanderson, Warbreaker)

    šŸ’¬ Hilarious!

šŸ’¬ I can’t imagine retiring in the traditional sense. I’ll always be coding, writing, and creating something.

  • I have started using Obsidian to manage my work notes. I created a new vault for each client connected to source control using Git.

Obsidian allows me to work with local markdown files, which has been a great experience.

Also, Obsidian is free and secure!

  • I have used the new Windows snap management in the latest Windows 11 update. It is a significant improvement over the previous version, but it’s still not nearly as flexible as FancyZones that is included in PowerToys.

I’m still getting used to it.

  • I have also disconnected and closed my Plausible Analytics account. If you need analytics, I still highly recommend Plausible.

I don’t need to see how much traffic my blog is getting. It’s another distraction.

Engagement is a better way to know if something clicks.

  • I officially broke up with my Ghost blogs today. I love Ghost. I think it’s beautiful, simple, and powerful. I highly recommend Ghost for creating content and building an audience. I only want to share without pressure to do so in a formal blog or newsletter. Micro.blog it is.

  • I added a vertical monitor to my workspace. I like having the extra space to stick my Teams video calls, calendar, and other static things.

It’s when you set aside your distractions, he said, that you begin to see what you were distracting yourself from. - Stolen Focus p27 šŸ’¬

  • Currently reading: Stolen Focus by Johann Hari šŸ“š

As a kid, I’ve always struggled with focus and attention, even without digital distractions. I’m a daydreamer. Today’s digital tools have made our lives simpler, yet at a cost. Even as I read the introduction to this book, I noticed I picked up my phone at least twice.

Staying focused becomes more manageable when working on something I enjoy—writing code, building something, solving a problem. It’s easy to get into focus during those times. We can’t always be in deep focus. What do we do when we’re not?

I’m hoping this book is not only about scare tactics. I’m not expecting some miracle cure, but perhaps a guide through my own thoughts to help figure out what works for me.

I hope I can stay focused enough to read through the nearly 300 pages in this book. :)

  • šŸ“± Airshow Podcast App

I discovered a new podcast app for iOS called Airshow. It is from the same creators of Feedbin, the popular RSS service. What’s interesting is that Airshow actually uses Feedbin to sync podcasts between devices. This makes sense since it’s all RSS. What I like about Airshow is its simplicity. It’s a beautiful app. There are no bells and whistles. You can add podcasts as a Subscription or Bookmark. Subscriptions are automatically downloaded and added to your queue. Continue reading →
